Improvement to energy efficiency in the seawater pumping system for the Playa Blanca desalination plant
The project "Improvement to the energy efficiency of the seawater pumping system for the Playa Blanca desalination plant" is one of the energy savings and efficiency actions for desalination plants. It is jointly funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), which provides financial support from the European Union, and managed by the Instituto para la Diversificación y Ahorro de la Energía (Institute for the Diversification and Saving of Energy, IDAE), with the aim of developing a cleaner, more sustainable economy.
The purpose of the action is basically to reduce the seawater pumping system's electricity consumption. This system transfers seawater at 540 m3/h from the coast to the Playa Blanca desalination plant, a distance of 2.5 km with a rise of 55 m. This action will reduce electricity consumption by 154 MWh a year, equivalent to 13.2 toe (tonnes of oil equivalent) a year.
